Tukan - wip 2

Poppies in glass vase - finished

I have finished the painting "Poppies in glass vase".
You can see I changed colors, I found the blue cloth didn't stand out enough, I also added subjects that is not on my sketch.

My intentions (I want to get in the habit of writing an intention down, and it seems like a fine idea as I can use it to evaluate my work), was to paint "a colorful,  busy painting, with exciting lines, abstracting and distortion of perspective".

I think my painting is colorful - in a complementary triad (red-orange and blue-green) - and it is busy too. The 3 poppies placed in a glass vase, surrounded with abstracted bottles, fabrics/tablecloth, a chair).
I didn't add much lines - and that has to do with both the support and the composition. It is much easier to make lines on paper than on this canvas, and I didn't really find a relevant place for it, although the definition of the flowers and the small bottles shapes are outlined.
I have disorted the perspective, easy to be seen in the bottle on right side.

I show you some details of the painting, I love the transparency of watercolors, and the lovely edges and runs they make by themselves.  I am happy with the painting.

Poppies in glass vase - wip 2

My progress with "Poppies in glass vase".

As you can see I've started adding some background. Some of it imitating fabric with blue stribes and checkered pattern. And a yellow vase that is distorted in perspective.

More need to be done, so I'll be painting again tomorrow.

Poppies in glass vase - wip

Poppies again. These oriental poppies are one of my favorite flowers. I love their strong orange-red colors, shining surface and violetblack midth.  They just glow in the garden.

I paint these on 50x50 cm watercolor canvas. It's quite different than painting on paper - things you can do and things you cannot. One advantage is you can better correct mistakes (if taken in time).

You can see glimpses of my sketches for the painting at upper left corner. Right now I am in one of those moments of doubt with the painting ... I am not aiming for a white background all over, so something has to happen with that... feel my sketch was a bit easier to manage than this !

I intend to paint an abstracted/expressionist painting, where I can put things in different perspectives and play with the composition.

Working title: Poppies and glass vase.

Poppies - watercolor

Yesterday I started playing around with my watercolors - it's been quite a while since I used them loose and painterly (in contrast to filling in illustration drawings or realistic painting).

I am absolutely in love with the flow and marks of watercolors and their incomparable transperency - but it is not that easy to paint loosely.

This image is a part of a larger painting. And this is one of the nice parts of it, some of it just didn't work out. Most of all, due to composition-problems.

I like the linework and flowing paint combined - the lost edges and the spattering of paint. I will continue with another painting - doing my composition work more improved !
